Known by various names in different mountainous regions, Rhododendron is not just one of the most beautiful flowers, it is also beneficial thanks to its medicinal properties. It is also the state tree of Uttarakhand.

Studies have shown that the flower contains Phenols, Xanthoproteins, coumarins, and tannins, amongst other chemicals of medicinal value. The health benefits include various properties, including anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, and it’s found to be protective of the heart and liver too. Ayurveda and homeopathy use it to treat bronchitis, arthritis, gout, rheumatism, etc. Young leaves are also used for headaches and inflammation.

Rhododendron

Juice made from flowers is very popular as it’s filled with sweet nectar. The flowers are also used in various religious rituals. The smoke emanating from the Buransh wood is considered purifying. Apart from the juice, Buransh is also used for making jellies, squash, and local wine. Sometimes you also find Buransh Pakoras and Paranthas. The tree grows at a height, usually five to eight thousand feet, and in Uttarakhand, its flaming heralds the onset of spring. Although, of late, it has started blooming early. The red color is the most common, but as you go higher,  you may find pink and even white Buransh.
